MOUTHWASH

How to prevent bad breath when you are at work?
In today’s world, people spend much of their time at office rather than home. So, it is important to take care of your oral health at work. The one thing that makes you feel embarrassed is the bad breath that come out from your mouth when you speak to your boss or colleague.

(Good News)

It is always good to have a mini mouthwash bottle with you to work. After your lunch you can go to the washroom and use the mouthwash to preserve your oral health. Listerine is one of the best dental rinse used as a mouthwash. It have 3 different flavors. You should not eat or drink for next 30 minutes after you rinse your mouth with the antiseptic solution.

(HyperCity)

“While rinsing can leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh, it's important to consider mouthwash a supplement to your regular oral healthcare routine-not as a replacement for brushing and flossing. Make sure to follow the mouthwash manufacturer's directions, which will usually involve rinsing or gargling for at least      30 seconds to maximize its benefits. And remember, a little will go a long way!”

FLOSSING

Is it ok to floss your teeth at work?

I have seen many people brushing their teeth but only some people do flossing at their workplace.

“In some workplaces, your co-workers might give you a funny look if they catch you flossing in the bathroom. In places like Brazil, everyone in the office goes into the bathroom to both floss and brush after lunch time (which is awesome!).”(Burhenne, 2013, para.1).

(Burhenne, 2013)

FIVE REASONS.TO FLOSS YOUR TEETH DAILY:

1.     Flossing and brushing are more effective than brushing alone.
2.     Flossing protects your gums.
3.     Flossing help prevent disease.
4.     Flossing also banish bad breath.
5.     Flossing removes food stuck in between the teeth.

Types of floss

Depending on the condition of your gum and space between the tooth, floss are of two types.

(Floss)

Waxed or String floss is used when the space in between the tooth is tight.

Unwaxed or filament floss is used if you have larger space in between the teeth.

How to Floss your Teeth

Flossing helps prevent the health and aesthetics of your smile. The Proper technique of flossing is shown in this video.

BRUSHING TECHNIQUE

Many people have this question in their mind.

SHOULD THEY BRUSH THEIR TEETH AT OFFICE?

Yes, you can brush your teeth at office as it is a good way of keeping your teeth clean and breathe fresh. Always carry your toothpaste and toothbrush along with you to your office in your purse or in a kit. Don’t forget to place your toothbrush in a case to keep it free from germs.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO BRUSH?

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your daily routine. Proper brushing involves 2-3 minutes and should be done twice daily.

(Mouth Healthy)

Steps to be followed while brushing your teeth are:

1.     Place the toothbrush in the right position on the tooth as shown in the figure below.
2.     Start by cleaning the outer area of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
3.     Followed by cleaning the inner area of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
4.     Lastly don’t forget to brush the chewing areas of the teeth and brush your tongue.

Tilt the brush at a 45° angle against the gumline and sweep or roll the brush away from the gumline.
Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes.
Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.

Brushing your teeth is incomplete, if you do not use a floss to clean between the teeth because the bristles of the toothbrush can’t clean the bacteria stuck between the teeth. So, in my coming post I will be discussing about flossing. Stay tuned!

TOOTHBRUSH

Why You Should Use a Soft Toothbrush

“Dentists always tell you to use a soft toothbrush as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), but have you ever wondered why soft bristles are better?” Many people believe that toothbrush with harder bristles are most effective in removing bacteria from the teeth but they do not know that if you clean your teeth aggressively, part of the tooth structure will be removed along with the bacteria. (Why You Should, 2012, para.1).

Soft Toothbrush

Types of Toothbrush

There are basically two types of toothbrush: manual and powered. Manual toothbrush consist of soft, medium and hard bristles. These toothbrushes are flexible and will thoroughly clean your teeth and cheek. Electrical toothbrush have tightly compacted bristles and also consist of a timer on it which shows the time used for brushing teeth.

(Health Guidance)

Benefits of a Soft Bristle Toothbrush

A soft bristle toothbrush is preferred over the medium or hard bristle because it does not cause damage to the tooth structure and prevents bleeding of the gums.

Consideration for Choosing aToothbrush

When you decide to buy a toothbrush always pick the one which has ADA seal on it. Sometimes soft bristled toothbrush can also damage your teeth if they are not shaped properly at the tip. Always make sure before buying the toothbrush that the bristles are rounded at the tip.

Soon I will be talking about the proper brushing techniques, which is very useful when we brush our teeth and to keep each area of the teeth clean.

Welcome to my blog

My name is Rooksana Sultana and I am currently enrolled in the second term of The Medical Office Administration Program.

In this blog I will be talking about what oral hygiene is? And why is it necessary in our daily life? Oral health is not only important to your appearance and sense of well-being, but also to your health. Moreover, I will also discuss the negative effects of poor oral hygiene at your office and several ways of maintaining good oral hygiene.

I have chosen to focus on importance of oral hygiene at work place in this blog assignment because I think oral hygiene is crucial throughout the day, not just in the morning and evenings. That means you need to pay attention to your teeth and gums even while you are at work. It is very hard to keep up with your oral care at the office. The five steps to make oral hygiene easier at office are:
1. Consider your smile - 7 ways to make oral hygiene easier at the office

  • Stock up on supplies – keep you toothbrush, paste and dental floss stored at your workstation.
  • Eat for optimal mouth health – try to avoid sugary food.
  • Chew Gum – this helps to cleanse your teeth.
  • Remember that water is wonderful – always have it on your desk as it keeps you hydrated and removes bacteria by vigorously swishing your mouth with water.

I am also going to discuss the characteristics of a good toothbrush, proper brushing technique, flossing technique and use of mouthwash in my coming post.
